Children’s oral language skills in preschool can predict their academic success later in life.
Children played with the robot for two months.The robot was designed as a social character, engaging children as a peer, not as a teacher, within a relational, dialogic context.
Furthermore, because children may learn better when appropriately challenged, we asked whether a robot that matched the “level” or complexity of the language it used to the general language ability of the child might help children improve more.
Robot Helps Autistic Children Learn Social Skills
Many schools are filled with loud noises, active classrooms and nearly non-stop social interactions.
So, researchers in Britain have made a child-sized robot to help autistic children learn social skills.
The robot uses games and songs to help the children learn social interaction and communication skills.
He says the robot’s movements are directed by an adult, who uses remote control equipment.
It can change to meet the needs of the 170 children who have played with him over the past 10 years.
You might hear of a child described as being “on the spectrum.” This means that tests showed the child has some level of autism.
"This long-term study is very important, because it's important to see is there's any transference of these skills when they play with the robot into other context like in the classroom or at home;

Storytelling with robots: Effects of robot language level on children's language learning
Children's oral language skills in preschool can predict their academic success later in life.
I evaluated whether this adaptation influenced (i) whether children learned new words from the robot, (ii) the complexity and style of stories children told, and (iii) the similarity of children's stories to the robot's stories.
While children in all conditions learned new vocabulary words, created new stories during the game, and enjoyed playing with the robot, children who played with the adaptive robot improved more than children who played with the non-adaptive robot.
Understanding how the robot influences children's language, and how a robot could support language development will inform the design of future learning/teaching companions that engage children as peers in educational play.
