A single processing node in one layer of the network will generally receive data from several nodes in the layer below and pass data to several nodes in the layer above.
Calculating a dot product usually involves fetching a weight from memory, fetching the associated data item, multiplying the two, storing the result somewhere, and then repeating the operation for every input to a node.
The chip can thus calculate dot products for multiple nodes  16 at a time, in the prototype  in a single step, instead of shuttling between a processor and memory for every computation.

Recurrent neural network
A recurrent neural network (RNN) is a class of artificial neural network where connections between nodes form a directed graph along a sequence.
The term 'recurrent neural network' is used indiscriminately to refer to two broad classes of networks with a similar general structure, where one is finite impulse and the other is infinite impulse.
A finite impulse recurrent network is a directed acyclic graph that can be unrolled and replaced with a strictly feedforward neural network, while an infinite impulse recurrent network is a directed cyclic graph that can not be unrolled.
Both finite impulse and infinite impulse recurrent networks can have additional stored state, and the storage can be under direct control by the neural network.
Such controlled states are referred to as gated state or gated memory, and are part of long shortterm memorys (LSTMs) and gated recurrent units.
In 1993, a neural history compressor system solved a 'Very Deep Learning' task that required more than 1000 subsequent layers in an RNN unfolded in time.[5]
In 2014, the Chinese search giant Baidu used CTCtrained RNNs to break the Switchboard Hub5'00 speech recognition benchmark without using any traditional speech processing methods.[10]
Basic RNNs are a network of neuronlike nodes organized into successive 'layers', each node in a given layer with a directed (oneway) connection to every other node in the next successive layer.[citation needed]
Nodes are either input nodes (receiving data from outside the network), output nodes (yielding results), or hidden nodes (that modify the data on route from input to output).
For supervised learning in discrete time settings, sequences of realvalued input vectors arrive at the input nodes, one vector at a time.
At any given time step, each noninput unit computes its current activation (result) as a nonlinear function of the weighted sum of the activations of all units that connect to it.
For example, if the input sequence is a speech signal corresponding to a spoken digit, the final target output at the end of the sequence may be a label classifying the digit.
Instead a fitness function or reward function is occasionally used to evaluate the RNN's performance, which influences its input stream through output units connected to actuators that affect the environment.
The gradient backpropagation can be easily regulated to avoid gradient vanishing and exploding while keeping longterm memory as well as memory of any range.
An Elman network is a threelayer network (arranged horizontally as x, y, and z in the illustration) with the addition of a set of 'context units' (u in the illustration).

Artificial neural network
Artificial neural networks (ANNs) or connectionist systems are computing systems vaguely inspired by the biological neural networks that constitute animal brains.[1]
For example, in image recognition, they might learn to identify images that contain cats by analyzing example images that have been manually labeled as 'cat' or 'no cat' and using the results to identify cats in other images.
An ANN is based on a collection of connected units or nodes called artificial neurons which loosely model the neurons in a biological brain.
In common ANN implementations, the signal at a connection between artificial neurons is a real number, and the output of each artificial neuron is computed by some nonlinear function of the sum of its inputs.
Signals travel from the first layer (the input layer), to the last layer (the output layer), possibly after traversing the layers multiple times.
ANNs have been used on a variety of tasks, including computer vision, speech recognition, machine translation, social network filtering, playing board and video games and medical diagnosis.

Neural network processing and AI workloads are both hot topics these days, driving multiple companies to announce their own custom silicon designs or to plug their own hardware as a topend solution for these workloads.
Instead of being forced to rely on cloud connectivity to drive AI (and using power to keep the modem active), SoCs could incorporate these processors and perform local calculations.
