Context:Brussels, Dec 8 (UNI) Delivering on its strategy onartificial intelligenceadopted in April 2018, the European Commission (EC) has presented a coordinated plan prepared with Member States to foster the development and use ofartificial intelligencein Europe.According an EC press release here, this plan proposes joint actions for closer and more efficient cooperation between Member States, Norway, Switzerland and the EC in four key areas: increasing investment, making more data available, fostering talent and ensuring trust.

Delivering on its strategy on artificial intelligence (AI) adopted in April 2018, the Commission has presented a co-ordinated plan prepared with member states to foster the development and use of AI in Europe.

The co-ordinated action plan will ensure that Europe reaps the benefits of AI for citizens and businesses and competes globally, while safeguarding trust and respecting ethical values.” The plan proposes joint actions for closer and more efficient co-operation between member states, Norway, Switzerland and the Commission in four key areas: increasing investment, making more data available, fostering talent and ensuring trust.

International Security and Lethal Autonomous Weapons

With the EU strategy on Artificial Intelligence (AI) adopted in December 2018, the Panel members will over the coming months provide substantive expert input to help ensure the development of AI which can be used in weapons systems fully complies with international law and respects human dignity.

The strategy highlights that the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy will, with the support of the Commission, build on consultations in the United Nations, the Global Tech Panel, and other multilateral fora, and coordinate proposals for addressing these complex security challenges.  How governments should manage the rise of AI to ensure we harness the opportunities while also addressing the threats of the digital era is a major international debate.
