AI News, Google Founders Sergey Brin And Larry Page Step Down From Top ... artificial intelligence
What Next For Google After Larry And Sergey’s Departure?
[+] 2003 Larry Page and Sergey Brin are to step down from the day-to-day running of Alphabet, the holding they created to ensure the diversification of their investment interests into long-term projects such as self-driving vehicles, research into prolonging human life, home automation, artificial intelligence, intelligent cities, internet access via fiber or balloons, using drones for logistics or wind turbines, among others.
Now, less than two decades later, we are basically talking about two superstar multi-billionaires who launched their project more than two decades ago, who now have some gray hair, and who have had enough of dedicating themselves to something they soon discovered they never liked in the first place: managing a business.
on that same field to end up managing a large companies… in order to do that, you typically get a Management degree, which is a totally different thing requiring a totally different set of skills and knowledge.Computer scientists don’t necessarily make good business managers, and they don’t necessarily enjoy doing so.
Google Founders Brin, Page Step Down; Pichai Takes Over As Alphabet CEO
They made Google into one of the world's largest, most profitable companies, dominating online search, digital advertising and video.
'We've never been ones to hold on to management roles when we think there's a better way to run the company,' they wrote in a letter Tuesday.
Google, whose early unofficial motto was 'don't be evil,' has long been known for its open and freewheeling culture, with employees encouraged to speak out.
Google Co-Founders Step Down as Execs of Parent Alphabet
The co-founders of Google are stepping down as executives of its parent company, Alphabet, ending a remarkable two decades during which Larry Page and Sergey Brin shaped a startup born in a Silicon Valley garage into one of the largest, most powerful — and, increasingly, most feared — companies in the world.
Google dominates online search and digital advertising and makes the world’s most widely used operating system for smartphones, Android.
It's hard to make it through a whole day without using one of Google's services — ranging from online tools to email, cloud computing systems, phones and smart speaker hardware.
Its video streaming business, YouTube, was fined $170 million to settle allegations it improperly collected personal data on children without their parents' consent.
'I will continue to be very focused on Google and the deep work we’re doing to push the boundaries of computing and build a more helpful Google for everyone.'
Alphabet — an umbrella corporation that the two created in 2015 — still boasts Google as its central fixture and key moneymaker.
'Today, in 2019, if the company was a person, it would be a young adult of 21 and it would be time to leave the roost,' they wrote in a blog post.
Both stopped making appearances at the weekly question-and-answer sessions with employees, and Page didn't attend this summer's Alphabet shareholders meeting even though he was still in the CEO role.
Offended lawmakers derided Google as “arrogant.” Although Bajarin said he doesn’t believe Brin and Page are leaving “because the fire is getting hotter,” he said Pichai's role at Google has been preparing him for the increased government scrutiny.
Page grew up in Michigan, where his late father, Carl, was a computer scientist and pioneer in artificial intelligence, and his mother taught computer programming.
Sundar Pichai to lead Alphabet as Larry Page steps down
Google chief executive Sundar Pichai will assume the CEO role at parent firm Alphabet in a shakeup at the top of the Silicon Valley titan.
"While it has been a tremendous privilege to be deeply involved in the day-to-day management of the company for so long, we believe it's time to assume the role of proud parents - offering advice and love, but not daily nagging!"
Page, Brin and Pichai have shared an emphasis on developing artificial intelligence software to make web searching faster and more personalised, while expanding the range of information and services available from a simple text query.
But their vision faces unprecedented scrutiny, with governments on five continents demanding better safeguards, an end to what many view as anti-competitive conduct, and more taxes from the world's largest online advertising company.
Alphabet, which owns more than a dozen companies including self-driving car business Waymo and health care software company Verily, was created in 2015 as part of a restructuring.
The Google unit retained control of major businesses including video giant YouTube, the Android smartphone software and hardware operations, and cloud computing.
Page's retreat into the background drew increasing criticism from employees and US lawmakers, who demanded answers from him rather than Pichai about controversial projects such as an experimental search app for Chinese users.
Page and Brin developed the core Google search technology while they were still graduate students at Stanford, and it quickly proved far superior to competing search engines of the early Internet era.
