Traditionally, we would reduce the size of logic gates to fit more transistors, leading to more compute, but shrinking logic gates below about 5nm will cause the chip to malfunction due to a quantum physics phenomenon called quantum tunnelling, so we have to figure out a different way.

Neural networks these days have hundreds of layers, each with thousands of nodes, and they’re trained upon millions of data points, so its not the complexity of the calculations, but the scale which presents a challenge.

Although it is much more efficient, it leads to slight errors in calculations involving decimals, as some numbers are represented with an infinite trailing decimal in binary, so they get rounded off depending on how many bits are available to the computer.
