Venezuela Sets New Bitcoin Volume Record Thanks to 10,000,000% Inflation
Venezuelans traded more bolivars for Bitcoin (BTC) than ever before last week, but the statistics say more about fiat than cryptocurrency.
During that period, users on LocalBitcoins alone generated volumes of over 57 billion bolivars, beating the previous all-time high of 49 billion, which appeared in the previous week.

Justin Sun Surfaces in San Francisco, Contrary to Chinese Media Reports
UPDATE (July 23, 22:00 UTC): This article has been updated several times since initial publication as new information became available.
The 28-year-old entrepreneur has been the talk of the crypto community for the last 24 hours, starting with Monday night’s announcement that a bout of kidney stones led him to postpone a long-awaited lunch with finance titan Warren Buffett.
But that narrative was seemingly debunked in the afternoon, when a live video broadcast showed Sun in what appeared to be a San Francisco high-rise, the Bay Bridge in the background, joking that he wished he were in Miami.
It was a roller-coaster ride befitting the volatile crypto space, where it’s often hard to know what’s real, even by 2019 standards.
Sun bid $4.6 million earlier this year and seemingly intended to introduce the notoriously crypto-skeptical Buffett to a number of influential figures in the space.
Then, late Monday, the Tron Foundation announced the postponement, saying Sun had fallen ill with kidney stones and that the parties had “agreed to reschedule at a later date.” Hours later, a Chinese business news outlet suggested that the matter might not be so straightforward.
It also alleged the Tron network operated illegal gambling services accessible to Chinese residents and further took aim at Sun’s early startup Peiwo, a social app, accusing it of illegal involvement in the pornography business.
Describing Sun’s current kidney stone episode, Edwards told CoinDesk, “some moments you’re in excruciating pain, some moments you’re fine.” Tronix, the native token of the Tron network, slid 11 percent Tuesday amid all the confusion.
Stellar’s XLM just passed it to become the 10th largest crypto by market capitalization – $1.68 billion versus $1.67 billion, according to CoinMarketCap.
The Best (And Scariest) Examples Of AI-Enabled Deepfakes
There are positive uses for deepfake technology like making digital voices for people who lost theirs or updating film footage instead of reshooting it if actors trip over their lines.
But, it wasn't real-life footage—it was the combination of the celebrity's face, and the body of a porn actor fused together using deepfake technology to make it appear that something happened in real life even though it was faked.
Celebrities and public figures were originally the ones susceptible to the charade since algorithms required ample video footage to be able to create a deepfake, and that was available for celebrities and politicians.
With cries of “fake news” commonplace, a deepfake could be created to support any agenda to fool others into believing the deepfake is an authentic representation of what someone wants to communicate.
In fact, researchers have created a new software tool that allows users to edit the transcript of a video to alter the words—add, change, or delete—coming out of someone's mouth.
Deep Video Portraits, a system developed at Stanford University, can manipulate not only facial expressions such as can be seen in the President Obama deepfake, but also myriad movements including full 3D head positions, eye gaze and blinking, and head rotation by using generative neural networks.
The system only requires a few photographs of real faces to create the living portrait which could be cause for concern for 'ordinary people' who thought that they might be immune to deepfakes because there isn’t enough video footage of them to train the algorithms.
A programmer launched a free, easy-to-use app called DeepNude that would take an image of a fully clothed woman and remove her clothes to create nonconsensual porn.
Some researchers suggest that it’s better for ethical developers to continue to push the envelope when it comes to this technology so they can warn what’s possible to encourage more critical analysis of video content.
